It\u2019s written by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.asme.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Society of Mechanical Engineers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ASME) and contains most of the codes that govern elevator equipment. The equivalent in Canada is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scc.ca\/en\/standardsdb\/standards\/27206\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CAN\/CSA-B44-13 Safety Code for Elevators<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some states and provinces have additional codes, but we won\u2019t get into that here.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ASME states that elevators must be inspected annually, sometimes even monthly, depending on the machine&#8217;s age and daily traffic. Of course, during an inspection or routine maintenance, we\u2019re also looking for failure points. Usually, your doors, buttons, and railings get inspected. It\u2019s also very important that the emergency phone connections work, the fire testing log is accurate, and the cabs have their elevator certificates. <\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c685bf4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"c685bf4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The Three Key Areas of Elevator Maintenance and Inspection<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c8cdd80 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"c8cdd80\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4af5935 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4af5935\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During maintenance, workers must interact with three areas of the elevator system. Each area has its own safety codes that must be followed. Below, we\u2019ll cover some of the relevant codes and technology that keep them safe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h3><strong>1. Hoistways<\/strong><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hoistway is the technical term for the elevator shaft. It\u2019s here that the moving parts of the system are exposed, so the health and safety codes are extensive. The ASMEE details regulations relating to hoistways beginning in section 2.1 of the Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because workers are within the shaft, the railings on the top of the cab are crucial to their safety. These railings must be built to code. Some of these codes include:\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.10.2 Must be constructed of metal\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.10.2.1-3 Must consist of a top rail, intermediate rail, and toeboard<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.10.3 Must withstand a force of 890 N at any point along the top rail and 666 N along the intermediate rail.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At AVT Beckett, we provide completely customizable and durable car top railings to keep the field safe. Machine Rooms<\/strong><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An elevator machine room is where you\u2019ll find the controller, disconnects, and motor. It\u2019s usually on the top floor of a building, in a room that can only be accessed by verified personnel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll find safety codes for the machine room beginning in section 2.7. There\u2019s also a number of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/codes.iccsafe.org\/content\/IBC2012\/chapter-30-elevators-and-conveying-systems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">building codes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that discuss the types of signage required in machine rooms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guards come in two types. There are the fence-style guards that act as cages that must be opened to access the elevator components.
